Barkly Regional Arts School Holiday Program

Rock with the Doc

Build your own instrument, create your own band, and record a track to rock out on Australia Day!

Timeline
Dr Flouride will train young people over 3 weeks in music, recording and performing.

Start date- Monday 8th Jan
Finish date- Friday 26th Jan

Objectives
Build: Participants will start by building their own easy-to-assemble electric, bass, acoustic guitar or kick doof drum with Dr Flouride. Through this process young people will learn how to string and tune instruments before moving into band practice.

Create: Participants will work with visual artist, HAHA (Reagn) to create their own ‘rock’ image by developing a design to place on their instrument. Young people will draw out their design and make them into stencils to then paint on their instrument.

Practice: Dr Flouride and guests will work with young people in music mentoring, learning how to play instruments. These sessions will be made up of introduction to playing, jamming time, learning songs and writing their own songs.

Rehearse: Dr Flouride will rehearse a song that the young people can perform on Australia Day. Depending on the participation this may result in a few participants forming a band while others perform in a group presentation.

Record: Dr Flouride will teach the basics of music recording and have each participant record a piece that they can take home and share.

Music Camp: 3 –day music camp at Winanjjikari Music Centre to learn how to set up a gig and record.

Perform: Participants in ‘Rock with the Doc’ have the opportunity to showcase their songs at Tennant Creek’s Australia Day celebrations at Lake Mary Ann and Band gig on Monday 29th Jan at Civic Hall.
PIPE UP

Young people will each be given a 1m-3m PVC Pipe to paint their own story onto. The result will be an exhibition.

Timeline
Over two weeks young people will learn visual art skills in drawing, stenciling and painting.

Start date- Monday 15th Jan
Finish date- Friday 26th Jan

Objectives
Prep: Coordinator will prep all PVC pipes onto bases so they are free standing.

Designing: Young people will work with visual artist, HAHA (Regan) and drawing artist, Rachel Pelser, to sketch their designs working around the theme ‘Place and Belonging’.

Painting: The designs will then be made into stencils to make an easy transfer of the design painted onto the PVC pipe with a glazed finished for durability.

Exhibition: PVC pipes will have a small exhibition on Australia Day and will then be a part of a bigger exhibition display in the ‘Kids Club’ area at the Desert Harmony Festival.
