“Baby Jesus, big star, Mary and Joseph and the cross”.
Susannah has painted a nativity scene as it is told in the Catholic Bible. Placed underneath a bright star is a cross, the infant baby Jesus and Mary and Joseph – represented as curved U-shaped figures, a common depiction of people in Indigenous art, representing the shape that is left in the sand from a seated person.
Susannah is a proud and devout Catholic, attending the Australian Indigenous Ministries church several days a week. Religious stories and iconography play a large role in Susannah’s subject choice and visual language.
