Last year, Lindy Brodie from barklyregionalarts, p Last year, Lindy Brodie from barklyregionalarts, painted an original story about military manoeuvres near Alroy Downs, her childhood place, for the Gallipoli Art Prize 2018 (for which she was selected as a finalist).

For this painting, she undertook a great deal of research, and rediscovered the story of the 1942 destroyer – HMAS Warramunga – whose motto was “Courage in Difficulties”.
This related closely to the Waramungu, her affiliation. The boat was launched during World War II.

Just came back from our last trip out to Canteen C Just came back from our last trip out to Canteen Creek & Epenarra with a visit and supply drop for the artists for the end of the year.

It's also Debbie's last trip out bush before she finishes with Barkly Arts, so we made sure to get a nice solid memory with the artist!

We'd love to give a special thanks to all the artists out there in Epenarra & Canteen Creek, we'll be happy to see everyone in 2021!

New to the collection: Army Painting (Warramunga: New to the collection: Army Painting (Warramunga: Courage in difficulties). Lindy 'Nungarrayi' Brodie (Alyawarr/Kaytetye/Waramungu) completed this work in 2019 after researching the story of the tribal-class destroyer HMAS Warramunga that was named after the Waramungu, her affiliation. The ship's badge shows an Aboriginal man throwing a boomerang and Brodie has reinterpreted this figure to show the presence of Indigenous soldiers in the battlefield.
"They travelled around all over the world everywhere...Long time, they have been fighting for us..." (Lindy Brodie, 2019).
The naming of the HMAS Warramunga and the ship's motto "Courage in Difficulties" pays tribute to the resilience of the Waramungu peoples, having experienced Frontier Wars during the 1900s, along with the harsh environmental conditions of the Central Desert.
Brodie was born in 1973 and grew up in Alroy Downs north-east of Tennant Creek. Brodie started her career as an artist in 2003 and has been with Tartukula Artists as part of Barkly Regional Arts since 2012. Her paintings often revisit the story of her family during the 1940s, and have been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

And one last set of photos from our set of Batik w And one last set of photos from our set of Batik workshops we facilitated in Canteen Creek, Epenarra and Elliott communities.

Here we have Gail Sandy (Left) and Kulumindini Art centre manager Elaine Sandy (Right) presenting a few of their batik scarves that were made.

The workshops were done in Elliott at the artists' Kulimindini Arts Centre.

The workshop was possible with help from Alice Springs Artist Chris Ng, who had been taught Batik in Indonesia through a cultural exchange program.

The scarves were purchased from @sustainable_fashion who have been an absolute delight to talk with!
